I got a sneak peek at the new Down One Bourbon Bar, which is opening Monday at 321 W. Main St., right in between the Yum! Center and the Galt House, directly across the street from BBC. It’s kinda cool because the bar is below street level, so you go down a flight of stairs to enter. It’s pretty bourbon-centric, hence the name, but the bar offers an impressive draft list (I remember seeing an NABC on tap, and that IPA from Lexington) as well as all the other spirits and their friends. I didn’t view a finalized cocktail menu, but I hear they’re playing up the favorites and sprinkling in a few twists here and there.
Down One will have more than 100 bourbons in stock and will be open for lunch and dinner. I briefly talked to the general manager and fellow buckeye, Christian Hattemer, who says there is no fryer in the place — so don’t expect pub grub favorites like nachos or wings. Instead, they’re focusing more on deli-style sandwiches and appetizers and trying to be as local as possible. A bacon-wrapped, gorgonzola-stuffed date got my attention. Why go on a date if it’s not wrapped in bacon? Ba-dom-dom!
Oh, and there’s a Speakeasy room you enter through a British-style phone booth … for private parties and crap like that that I never get an invite to. Holla!
