A friend of mine has been on a strict diet since September. On New Year’s Eve, he decided to have a couple of drinks while he hit a few parties. Needless to say, he didn’t leave the first party and passed out in the host’s bed long before midnight. Always one to look on the bright side, he shrugged his shoulders and said, “I drank myself out of potential drama.”

I can definitely relate. That pretty much sums up my 20s.

New year, new brew. I got talked into joining this beer club at Flanagan’s over the holiday. The rules are simple: Drink all 100 beers they offer, and you get a special mug with your name on it that you can then drink from (apparently giving you more beer for a cheaper price).

I was looking for goals to tackle this year, and this opportunity just kind of dribbled into my lap. May 2009 be riddled with change … for the good.

From a friend at Makers: In a champagne flute, add one part of Maker’s Mark Bourbon, then add 3 parts chilled sparkling apple cider. Garnish with a maraschino cherry.

Up for Karaoke?

I just heard that there will be no cover charge tonight at Starbase Q (921 W. Main St.), but lots of party favors, drink specials and karaoke. If you’re looking for a good time on the cheap, head on over. But fyi — Q is a gay bar, so don’t be offended by the dicks on the TV screens. Check your inhibitions at the door and sing me some Streisand!

Have you done something this year that has scared you? Challenged you? Pushed beyond your comfort zone? I’m not talking about trying a Bud Light Lime or drinking beer before liquor. You say you can sing. You can even strum a guitar and keep a beat. So quit hanging out in the karaoke bars and get your ass up on a real stage.

Tonight, my friend Teneia Sanders hosts an open mic night at Stevie Ray’s Blues Bar (230 E. Main St., 582-9945). Signups begin at 9 p.m. It’s free, and domestic beers are $2 — so come early, imbibe some courage and sing me a song. Both covers and originals are welcome. I might even bring my shaker.
