Downtown Summer Bourbon Soirée tonight!

Four Roses bourbon is hosting a Downtown Summer Bourbon Soirée tonight at Vincenzo’s from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The party will feature mixologist Gary Gruver, who will mix up several Four Roses cocktails that will pair well with appetizers from the restaurant. Master Distiller Jim Rutledge will also be on hand to lead a tasting.

Who’s gonna join me? It’s $25/person, and there will be cigars available and door prizes. Woot!

Some days Facebook annoys the fuck out of me. And today is one of them. People whining about traffic, or children, or health problems, or celebrities, or jobs. “Oh look, I’m so happy and in love!” “Look what my wife did for me!” If it wasn’t anal, I don’t want to hear about it. “Look at how beautiful my children are! You don’t have any, so you’re going to grow up an old and lonely lady, snacking on cheesecake with your girlfriends in an Orlando condo.” “Look at this wonderful inspirational quote I found … I’m so smart and philosophical.”

Angel’s Envy Cask Strength named best spirit in the world; Casper is pissed

Just released in November, Angel’s Envy’s Cask Strength bourbon was just named “Best Spirit in the World” on Paul Pacult’sTop Spirits List in the June 2013 edition of Spirit Journal. It tied for first with Highland Park 25-Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

According to the press release, the annual roundup reviews the “five-star distillates from all major spirits categories we’ve tasted over the preceding year,” says Pacult. In an earlier review of Cask Strength, Pacult awarded the brand five stars (as he did with the Angel’s Envy bourbon port cask finish) — his highest recommendation — and noted, “this masterpiece deserves a sixth rating star.”

Pacult’s review says, “the port pipe aspect comes shining through right from the get-go on this supple, caramel-laden and pipe tobacco-like opening aroma. Concludes long, roasted, meaty, winey, bakery shop bittersweet and fudge-like. This is the American whiskey equivalent of the mythical Black Bowmore 1964 Sherry Oak Islay Single Malt.”

Makes me want a sip right now. I was lucky enough to try some when it was released and thought it was simply amazing. Unfortunately it’s hard to get ahold of … they only released 600 bottles here and in Nashville. A rerelease is scheduled for November.

I attempted to get a statement from Casper the Friendly Ghost, the entity who usually wins “Best Spirit in the World,” but his people tell me he’s not available for comment but is drowning his sorrows with a bottle of Angel’s Envy.
